Overview

This off-road trip leads us to two fabulous sites: the Great Tsingy of Bemaraha and the lagoons of the South-West. Impressive geological formation made up of sharp peaks of limestone origin, the Tsingy of Bemaraha are also home to an incredible biodiversity. Continuation of the journey to Tulear by crossing the coastal tracks of the South-West. These are bordered by the second largest and certainly one of the most beautiful lagoons in the world. This route reveals the most beautiful face of Madagascar: colorful, authentic and wild. Each stage has its share of wonder for the traveler, like you, in search of an exceptional trip. Alefa a !

DAY 1: ANTANANARIVO - MORONDAVA

DAY 2 : MORONDAVA - CAMP AMOUREUX

From Morondava, one hour short transfer to reach Camp Amoureux. On arrival, visit of the Marofandilia forest with its baobabs, lemurs including the famous Microcebus Berthae, and several species of birds. Lunch on the spot. In the middle of the afternoon, we leave for a walk towards the baobab alleys. We go out for another walk of one hour at nightfall, to discover the species of lemurs and nocturnal birds quasi-endemic of the reserve.

About Camp amoureux : Located in the heart of the forest of Marofandilia, 44 km from Morondava, this singular camp is the property of the NGO Fanamby which works for the development of ecotourism within the protected area Menabe Antimena. Named after the presence of a large baobab tree in love on the camp, Camp Amoureux has 7 large tents with shelters, arranged in a private style. Built on platforms made of local materials, they are all equipped with private showers and toilets.

DAY 3: CAMP AMOUREUX - BEKOPAKA

Departure to reach Bekopaka, the gateway to the Tsingy of Bemaraha massif. We incrementally discover the unique western ecosystem of the Madagascar with its sparse dry forests. Crossing of rivers by a basic ferry (about 3 hours of navigation included). Arrival at the end of the day at the doors of the massif, and well-deserved rest at your hotel!

The passages of basic ferries require a little patience because they are the only way to cross these rivers. They are therefore subject to the river traffic.

DAY 4: MANAMBOLO GORGE AND SMALL TSINGY

Begin the discovery of the Tsingy of Bemaraha, by canoe down the Manambolo gorge with its caves. Then, visit the small Tsingy which will give you a glimpse of the great Tsingy. It is a massive karst structure shaped like accented limestone peaks. It has been forged by nature for centuries and is a shelter for many species of animals including lemurs and several species of rare plants. Picnic lunch.
After the visit, you will return to your hotel.

DAY 5: THE GREAT TSINGY

One-hour transfer by 4*4 to the starting point of the hike to explore the Grand Tsingy. The journey features magnificent shows of gigantic limestone cathedrals, dense network of faults, deep crevasses, and limestone blocks carved in blades or sharp points that make up an immense field of Tsingy. The walks on the roofs of the Tsingy offer a breathtaking panorama over the whole massif.

5h to 6h-visit including breaks, moderately difficult course. Some technical passages, small climbing, crossing of monkey bridge, ramp through labyrinths … The visit requires a good physical condition. Not recommended for people suffering from claustrophobia and dizziness. Necessary equipment: walking shoes or good sneakers, sun protection items, mosquito repellent, and water bottle. Picnic lunch prepared by us.

DAY 6: BEKOPAKA - MORONDAVA

Early departure to reach Morondava. Halfway there, we embark on a ferry to cross the Tsiribihina River. At the end of the afternoon, we will take the time to stop at the baobab avenue to admire a magnificent sunset through these majestic mythical trees!
Arrival at the hotel in the early evening.

DAY 7: MORONDAVA - BELO SUR MER

We will leave Morondava early to continue the adventure to Belo sur Mer. We will take a rough sandy trail to reach one of the most typical fishing villages of the west. The trail also crosses a few fords or dry river bed depending on the season. Arrival in mid-afternoon. Free lunch in Belo sur Mer

ATTENTION: The trail from Morondava to Belo Sur Mer has become really hard, due to unexpected issues with the river levels. Therefore, we reserve the right to modify as follows this journey at the last minute depending on the condition of the track: Morondava – Mandabe – Manja: without going through Belo sur Mer. This night will be replaced by one more night at ANDAVADAOKA or SALARY.

DAY 8: BELO SUR MER

Free day in Belo sur Mer. Several activities can be organized from your lodge.

Belo sur Mer is one of the most beautiful villages on the west coast. This coast also has several ecosystems: lagoons, mangroves and dunes. Belo sur Mer is also famous for its traditional boats building yards.

DAY 9: BELO SUR MER - MANJA

We are leaving the coastal track for a while to reach Manja, a village in the mainland. We are right within the Sakalava territory. We will cross a wide plain of grassy savannah to reach Manja, a noisy and colorful village … Installation in a very simple hotel. This step is mandatory to move towards the south-west. Picnic lunch prepared by us.

DAY 10: MANJA - ANDAVADOAKA

Early departure for a day on rough tracks.

4WD drive to Andavadaoka. Stop at Bevoay for the crossing of the “Mangoky” river on a rustic motorized tank! The road leads us to a dry deciduous forest of euphorbias, thorns and jujube trees. We will reach the coastal track in Morombe, a small hamlet in the west and a stopover point for refueling for Morondava and Tuléar. Arrival in Andavadaoka in the late afternoon.

DAY 11: ANDAVADOAKA - TSIANDAMBA

Morning by the seaside in Andavadoaka, enjoying the beach, the lagoon or the coral reef.

Departure after lunch. We will take a coastal trail to reach Tsiandamba in a beautiful landscape: a forest of Baobabs facing a lagoon. Arrival in Tsiandamba at the end of the afternoon

Free day by the sea.

Possibility to organize several activities from the hotel:

  • Water sports: traditional dugout canoeing, snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, water sports…

We still enjoy the lagoon for the morning before taking the road towards Tulear.

Note :

  • The Great Tsingy of Bemaraha: a rather sporty and technical circuit, it requires the use of ropes and harnesses. It requires an adequate physical condition and is not advised to people prone to vertigo or claustrophobia.
  • This trip can be done during dry period (the Tsingy of Bemaraha is only accessible from mid-April to early November)
