Tuléar

Gateway to the Deep South, at the end of the RN7.

Tuléar (Toliara) marks the end of the RN7, 900 kilometers from Antananarivo: it’s the gateway to the Deep South and the lagoons of the Mozambique Channel. A sun-baked port town, bustling with rickshaws and zebu carts, it’s above all the turning point between road and sea — towards Ifaty to the north or Anakao to the south.

Not to be missed

The Antsokay Arboretum with its hundreds of endemic spiny-bush plants, the seafront shell market, and the atmosphere of the port when the Vezo dugout canoes come home.

Good to know

Tuléar is one of Madagascar’s sunniest towns: rain is rare here year-round. Most travelers spend just one night here before heading to the beaches.
