Belo-sur-Mer

Lagoon, dhow shipyards and white dunes.

Best time to goApril → November Recommended duration2 to 3 days Trips1

Belo-sur-Mer is a timeless Vezo village, set between white dunes and lagoon, half a day’s drive south of Morondava on the track. It’s the great traditional shipyard of the west coast: the dhows and schooners that sail the Mozambique Channel are still built by hand, right on the beach.

Not to be missed

The open-air shipyards and their shipwrights, the salt pans that turn pink in the sun, swimming in the lagoon, and the coral islets offshore reached by sailing canoe.

Good to know

Getting there takes effort: a sand track by 4×4 or a boat transfer depending on the season. A simple, authentic village — solar power only, cash essential.
