Overview

One of the most beautiful itineraries through the Big Island. A complete crossing of the RN7, continuing by the coastal track of the Great South. After a journey on the Highlands, through mountains and rice fields, the trip continues on the sandy tracks of the South coast, crossing thorny forests and deserted beaches. We will also discover the most beautiful natural reserves of the South, such as Isalo, the Tsaranoro valley, the Anja forest, the Tsimanampesotse lake and the Berenty forest. Several hikes or walks will be organized according to your physical condition. The itinerary also offers the opportunity for extraordinary encounters with the local population. The ethnic groups of the Great South of Madagascar have an impressive cultural richness: the zebu civilization, the itinerant life of the fishermen or an unusual art and funeral rites. The adventure will end in Fort-Dauphin, at the edge of the Indian Ocean.

DAY 1: ANTANANARIVO – ANTSIRABE

After breakfast, we will take the road to the South. Discover the rural world of the Highlands of Madagascar, the architecture of its traditional houses, its rice fields and its own cultivating techniques … Stop at Ambatolampy. This village located at the foot of the Ankaratra massif is famous for its workshops manufacturing utensils exclusively made of aluminum. Then drive to Antsirabe.

DAY 2: HIKING IN THE VAKINANKARATRA COUNTRY

Whether on foot or by mountain bike, you will have the opportunity to discover the fascinating landscapes that characterize the Highlands: the hills, the villages set on their sides, the fields, the rice fields that extend as far as the eye can see … This tour will lead to beautiful encounters with peasants and artisans.

  • Mountain bike option: depending on your physical condition, 15km to 30 km. 4km of maximum climb on both routes. 11 km of descent on a 30km trail. Rolling laterite trail. 2h to 4h, medium level, on a paved road and a laterite trail.
  • Walking option: 3h to 4h walking. Approximately 400m of uneven terrain, medium level, hiking trail

Necessary equipment: walking shoes or good sneakers, sun protection items, bottle of water.

In the afternoon, tour of the city of Antsirabe. Antsirabe is an industrial city famous for its thermal baths and rickshaws, with its large colonial buildings and wide avenues, inherited from the missionaries and settlers. Tour of the city. Meeting and sharing with ingenious artists and craftsmen, working zebu horn or wood, manufacturer of miniatures, embroiderers…

DAY 3: ANTSIRABE – AMBOSITRA – FIANARANTSOA

After breakfast, drive to Ambositra. A multiethnic commercial crossroads where the geniuses of precious woodworking meet. We will stop for a while to discover sculptors and markers in their neighborhoods; skilled and friendly craftsmen who will be happy to welcome us in their home.

Continue to Fianarantsoa.

Tsaranoro
DAY 4 : FIANARANTSOA - TSARANORO

Walk in the old town of Fianarantsoa, to discover its history. Fianarantsoa, is an old royal city which became in 1830 administrative capital of the Betsileo region under the colonial power. Leave Fianarantsoa to go to Ambalavao. Enjoy the magnificent scenery of terrace-rice fields and vineyard. Stop at Anja’s Reserve, a dry forest located at the foot of an enormous granitic dome, for the discovery of the « Ring Tailed Lemur ». It is a 2h30 ride. Then, continuation towards a point of view to admire a splendid panorama on the valley. At the end of the day, connection through the lateritic track of Vohitsaoka to join the magnificent valley of Tsaranoro, situated at the foot of the Andringitra massif.

Isalo
DAY 5 : TSARANORO VALLEY - ISALO

Morning discovery of the Tsaranoro valley, one of the most beautiful places of the South . It is bordered, on one side, by the majestic cliff of Tsaranoro and, on the other, by the Andringitra mountain range. The hike will lead you to meet the local population, but also to discover the landscape of the Andringitra massif. Picnic lunch prepared by our care. Then, we leave the valley of Tsaranoro and continue our road towards the South. We are in full territory Bara, a people of breeders of zebu. Continuation towards Isalo and arrival on the spot at the end of the day.

DAY 6 : ISALO NATIONAL PARK

Visit of Isalo National Park. Transfer to the entrance of the park for a hike that will take you through the most beautiful sites of the massif. We will first go to the natural pool … through a path that passes through magnificent rocky walls that shelter some Bara tombs. We will stop at some points that offer breathtaking views on the massif. After swimming, we will continue the hike along a ridge line on the eastern part of the massif to end up at Namaza creek and forest. With a little luck, we will see some groups of lemurs. For the bravest ones, the walk will go on to the black and blue swimming pool, then to the Nymphs’ Waterfalls.

5h walk, 350m to 500m slopes and drops, medium difficulty level, hiking trail. Necessary equipment: walking shoes or good sneakers, items to protect from the sun, mosquito repellent, bottle of water

About the Isalo National Park: The oldest geological formation of Madagascar will open its doors to you. This massif of continental and ruiniform sandstone dates back to the Jurassic era. Its very typical geomorphology, sculpted by erosions, offers a stunning show of colors and shapes … Second largest national park in Madagascar, it contains unmatched richnesses in biodiversity (endemic rock plants, such as Aloes, Euphorbes, Pachypodes, Kalanchoe …) and a specific fauna.

DAY 7 : RANOHIRA - TULEAR - ANAKAO

Early in the morning, departure for Toliara, a city located on a broad coastal plain, surrounded by dunes and mangroves near the Tropic of Capricorn in the Mozambique Channel. Enjoy the first glimpses of baobabs rising majestically in the middle of the savannah and the magnificent Antandroy and Mahafaly tombs. City tour. Then, transfer to the port. Boarding speedboat for a one-hour navigation to Anakao. Get settled at your hotel and day of relaxation by the sea.

DAY 8 : EXCURSION TO NOSY VE : SNORKELING AND OBSERVATION OF THE TROPICBIRD

Beautiful day planned to Nosy Ve, a paradise islet located off Anakao. Nosy Ve is bordered by a white sand beach and surrounded by a splendid turquoise lagoon, which shelters an extraordinary marine fauna. The islet is also famous for its tropicbirds nests: a unique place to observe these fascinating birds. Observation of the tropicbird, snorkeling and swimming. Picnic lunch planned in the shade, facing the lagoon. Return to Anakao, in the late afternoon.

DAY 9 : ANAKAO - TSIMANAMPETSOTSA NATIONAL PARK - AMBOLA

We leave Ambola to discover the national park of Tsimanapetsotsa: the lake Tsimanapesotsa is the first "Ramsar" site of Madagascar, that is to say classified by the International Convention of the Wetlands. Stroll along the lake with pink flamingos and discovery of a magnificent dry forest where baobabs and unusual succulent plants with medicinal properties abound. Short transfer to Ambola. Lunch at the hotel's restaurant. Free afternoon in Ambola.

DAY 10 : AMBOLA - ITAMPOLO

Continuation of the track along the coast. Arrival at Itampolo in the middle of the morning. We will enjoy the beach or, according to your wishes, we will walk to the fishing village and the impressive Mahafaly tombs, in company of your guide. Lunch at the lodge. In the middle of the afternoon, short hike towards a cave where we will be able, with a little luck, to observe a group of Catta Lemur.

DAY 11 : ITAMPOLO - MENARANDRA - LAVANONO

Big day of track. Two difficult passages: the sand river of Linta and the river of Menarandra. Shortly after Itampolo, we leave the coast to go up a little, at the height of the plateau of Saodona. Picnic lunch. Then, crossing a rocky track, we approach the Menarandra and, leaving the land, we join the coast of the extreme south. Arrival at the end of the afternoon at Lavanono.

DAY 12 : LAVANONO - BERENTY

After the breakfast, continuation of the track. We leave the coast and go up to the national road 13 to continue the road towards Berenty. We go through the villages of Tsiombe and Ambovombe. Lunch in a local restaurant. Crossing of a sisal plantation before arriving in Berenty, in the late afternoon. Picnic lunch.

Fort Dauphin
DAY 13 : BERENTY RESERVE - FORT DAUPHIN

The private reserve covers an area of 240 hectares and extends along the Mandrare river. The flora and fauna are the gallery forest, both dry and thorny. The site is recognized as an ornithological spot. We also observe lemurs and mainly the Sifaka or dancing lemur. Lunch reserved at the lodge. We take the road to Fort Dauphin in the afternoon.

DAY 14 : FORT DAUPHIN

Free day at leisure in Fort Dauphin
The guide and the vehicle remain at your disposal for this day: possibility of visit of the reserve of Nahampoina, of an excursion to Sainte Luce or idleness on the splendid beach of Libanona.

DAY 15 : FORT DAUPHIN - ANTANANARIVO

Flight back to the Antananarivo. The guide and the vehicle remain at your disposal until the international flight takes off.

Note :

About 6 hours of driving per day on the national road 7. Once on the tracks, travel times are given as an indication and depend entirely on the imponderables of the bush: weather, track conditions, river levels.
During the southern winter (June – End of August), the temperature is around 7°C, early in the morning and in the evening in the Highlands (Antananarivo – Fianarantsoa), especially in the Antsirabe region.
