Lemurs, the great Pangalanes lake and the lagoons of Sainte Marie

The trip

A short getaway in eastern Madagascar. After exploring the protected areas of Andasibe, we'll sail through the interlacing chain of large lakes that form the Pangalanes Canal — an original way to reach the coastal town of Tamatave. This trip reveals several species of the legendary animal that has made the Great Island famous, the lemur: first in the tropical forest of Andasibe, then on the sandbars of the Pangalanes Canal, and finally on the island of Sainte Marie. A little Eden with its primary forests, historic sites, inhabitants and seabeds, Sainte Marie welcomes humpback whales to its warm waters every year from July to October.

Antananarivo - Andasibe 2

141 km, 3h30 to 4h of driving depending on stops We hit the road in the morning, heading east. Then we descend the eastern escarpment to reach an intermediate plateau leading to the Andasibe reserve. Arrival at lunchtime, on your own. In the afternoon, we set off for a first outing to a reserve managed by a local NGO. A lovely first introduction to the wildlife of Andasibe. D2
Andasibe National Park

A day dedicated to a full exploration of the Andasibe protected area. In the morning, we set off for a long forest walk in the Analamazaotra Special Reserve. About 4h of walking and up to 200m of elevation gain, easy walk, hiking trail sometimes muddy. Equipment required: good walking shoes, insect repellent, a waterproof bag for electronic devices, rain gear and a water bottle. D6
Tana - Sainte Marie

Transfer to the airport for a flight to Sainte-Marie. Welcome on arrival and transfer to your hotel. Sainte Marie is located on the east coast, a treasure in its own setting: 49km long, with its coasts 5 to 12km apart, the small island is the place to combine discovery (on foot or by bike), thrills and rest. If we had to sum up its beauty and richness, Sainte Marie would be like a novel: a former haunt of pirates and buccaneers whose presence is still marked by cemeteries, and whose influence remains rooted in the culture of local residents today. It would also be a « garden island »: clove, vanilla, cinnamon, coffee and pepper crops thrive here; it boasts magnificent white sand beaches, a lagoon and rich seabeds fringed by a coral reef, and, in season, a whale nursery: every year during the austral winter, the island hosts a spectacular display. Large groups of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) migrate from Antarctica to the Sainte-Marie channel, an ideal breeding ground. Here, these giants of the sea find favorable conditions for raising their young and for their courtship and acrobatic displays, before the great return to colder seas. Île aux Nattes, further south (2.5km by 1.5km), separated by a 400m-wide channel, can equally be a place to relax or for a day excursion. Lunch on your own. Dinner, overnight and breakfast at Princesse Bora Lodge or similar.

Overnight: Princesse Bora Lodge ★★★★ — Bed & breakfast

D7–D9
